During 2005 we were favored with the donation of 1,120 wheel chairs by the WHEELCHAIR FOUNDATION, a not for profit association whose mission is to eliminate the impossibility to move to all persons with a physical incapacity. This donation was possible with the help of volunteers who made a national survey during 2003/2004 to find out persons with that need. The fundraising was made in New York City.
This donation was an initiative of Ms. Libby Pataki, NYS Governor George Pataki's wife, who is the Honorific President of the Wheelchair Foundation, in conjunction with Ms. Maria M Khury and Dr. Ramón Tallaj and was coordinated by the HHS FOUNDATION in the Dominican Republic as well as in New York.
The opening of this activity was held on January 10th and was presided by Héctor Hipólito Algarroba, President and Sonia Martínez, Executive Director accompanied by the work team at the Hotel Hispaniola, thanks to the generosity of its Director Antonio Casales and Mrs. Ludovina Vargas who facilitated the swimming pool area so that people with physical incapacity could receive their wheel chairs.
The event was honored with the presence of Mr. David Behring, President of the Wheelchair Foundation and Mrs. Libby Pataki, its Honorific President and received the blessing of Moseñor Pablo Cedano who acted on behalf of “Su Eminencia Reverendísima” Nicolás de Jesús Cardenal López Rodríguez and Mrs. Lisa Kubiske from the USA Embassy among other important persons.
We delivered all the 1,120 wheel chairs as follows: Santo Domingo 316, Monte Plata and Sabana Grande de Boya 4, Pedro Brand 8, San Isidro , Guerra , La Caleta and Boca Chica 38, Yamasá 6, Haina, Nigua, Villa Altagracia and San Cristóbal 28, Bani 22, Azua 12, Barahona 31, Duverge 25, Jimani 8, La Descubierta 11, San Juan de la Maguana 45, Elías Piña 42, Tamayo 21, Pedernales 1, Neyba 1, Miches 13, El Seybo 13, Higuey 1, La Romana 9, San Pedro de Macorís 101, Hato Mayor 7, Samana 15, Nagua 15, La Vega 11, Santiago 75, Pimentel y Castillo 41, Moca 70, Puerto Plata 6, Cotui 17, Bonao 8, Valverde Mao 16, Dajabón, Partido and Loma de Cabrera 45, Monte Cristy 30, San Francisco de Macoris 1, Santiago Rodríguez 6.
The beneficiaries were very happy to receive their wheel chairs in the same city or village where they reside.
We also made Cardiological checking at School Los Conucos de Juan Dolio where Dr. Miguel Arias, Cardiologist MD was in charge of the operative whilst the medicines where donated by Laboratories Lam and Font Gamundi., This activity was coordinated by Dr. Petronila Martinez , Cardiologist MD, who is the Director for the area of Health in the Foundation.
The foundation coordinated a vaccination activity for a number of days in the facilities of the foundation, at School Los Conucos de Juan Dolio and in the parish of Villa del Faro. The vaccines were provided by the Area II of Health and were applied by Auxiliary Nurses Mariana Garcia and Luz Calderón. - |
